Covenant's Education Philosophy
What are we trying to teach? Well, certainly all of our lessons are rooted in scripture, and all are
taught in a way that is faithful to our Lutheran heritage. But, beyond
learning the stories, and beyond the application of stories and themes
to the faith journey we walk, we believe that there are three important
things we want your children to know, every time they walk through the
doors of Covenant: 1. They are loved by the kids they learn with. 2. They are loved by the adults of this congregation. 3. Most of all, they are loved by God. No matter what.
Parents: if you have children with special needs or concerns, please
talk to us about them - we are here to help you and your children have
the best possible Christian education experience.
Sunday Morning Ministries
9:10 to 10:15 a.m.
Ages 3 - Kindergarten: Covenant’s youngest Sunday school
children learn Bible stories using songs, crafts, games and stories. These
children get together for opening music and prayer, and then break out into
age-level classrooms.
1st Grade - 4th Grade:
For this age group, we use SPARK Rotation curriculum. This curriculum
teaches stories using a variety of sensory experiences, taking place through
games, a movie, arts and crafts, and in the kitchen. We begin with
high-energy music in the sanctuary, and then move to a rotation station for
a day of learning and fun.
5th Grade – 6th Grade: We are
using the SPARK Classroom curriculum for this age group, where instead of
learning six to eight stories during the year (the rotation model), the
children will be learning 30 stories in a classroom environment. They will
continue to join us for the opening in the sanctuary, but will move to their
classroom at 9:30 for 45 minutes of Bible study and application. We are
excited about this change in our programming, feeling that the change will
better equip the children for Confirmation, which is just around the corner.
7th Grade – 9th Grade:
All three grades will be combined (although there will also be small group
discussions throughout the year). We’ll gather in the Youth Room at 9:10 am
for fun (ping-pong, foosball, other games, as well as food and beverages).
At 9:30, we’ll move into the 8th grade room for some study, which will
include at least three different sources:
Witness Curriculum
Nooma (Rob Bell) videos
Faith Lens (a current events Bible Study from the ELCA)
Most importantly, we’ll be discussing the Bible and how it applies to
your life as a teenager, what’s going on in your life, and how your faith
can guide you as you face difficult challenges and decisions.
Note: Beginning last year, Confirmation students are required to
attend at least 10 Sunday school sessions each year of Confirmation.

Communion
Instruction
Communion Instruction for all 5th graders plus their parents, as well as for
any who are interested in learning more about communion and what it means to
be Lutherans, begins on Sunday, March 4h during the education hour. We will
meet March 4, 11 and 25.
Sunday School and Faith in Action Unite!
This year Covenant’s Sunday school will tithe our
offering to the missions of: Newborn Kits, Hospice Kits and Mosquito Nets.
Through the generosity of Covenant’s families we will be able to lovingly
welcome newborn babies into the world, graciously provide cleanliness and
comfort to those suffering AND can contribute to the eradication of malaria!
Offering is collected every week during the Sunday school hour so you have
many opportunities to support these meaningful and much needed missions.
Thank you!
Wednesday Evening Ministries
Peer Ministry
Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m.
Peer Ministry is a program for our post-confirmation high school youth. We spend
time together learning how to be better listeners, better responders, and better
friends to those in need. We start
with the simple question "and who is my neighbor?" (Luke 10:29), and answer the
question by learning skills that will last a lifetime.
At the end of the year, we commission our Peer Ministers during the "The Order
of the Towel" service, which will be on May 22,2O11.
Confirmation: Faith lnkubators! (FINK)
Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Fellowship Hall
Faith lnkubators is a high-energy confirmation program that incorporates
a balance of learning, serving,
community-building and fun with youth, their peers, and other generations. FINK
uses large-group teaching combined with small group reflection in order to plant
seeds of faith in the students (and
in the guides!).
Family Worship
A fun, full, energized service for families during our Sunday school hour.
This year, we will be having this service approximately every five weeks.
The service will have a message, scripture, prayers and will always have
Holy Communion, so it is a complete service – an opportunity for you to come
worship together as a family in a very relaxed setting aimed a little bit
more at our younger worshippers.
Confirmation Students: If you
attend Family Worship and complete a sermon note, you will receive credit
for both the sermon note and for Sunday school attendance. What a deal!
Volunteer Opportunities lf you are interested in volunteering within our education programs, we have a
place for you! Contact the church office at 873-7494 to find out how you can
help us and we can help you!
